Food waste is biodegradable waste results from various sources such as food processing industries, households, restaurants and hospitality sector.  According to FAO, about 1.3 billion tons of food including food vegetables, fruit, meat bakery and dairy products are lost along the food supply chain. The amount of food waste is expected to increase in next 25 years because of economic and population growth, mainly in Asian countries. It has been reported that the annual amount of urban food waste in Asian countries may rise from 278 to 416 million tons from 2005 to 2025. Approximately 1.4 billion hectares of fertile land (28% of the world’s agricultural land) is used annually to produce what we call food waste. Apart from food, money and land wastages, the carbon foot print of food waste is estimated to contribute considerably to Green House Gases. Since approximately 3.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide comes from food waste annually.

In this scenario, engineers and scientists around the world are doing different researches to harness this waste to get useful energy. Today different scientific processes and techniques are available which can be used to harness this waste. Food waste is carried out through many chemical processes to convert it into useful fuel. The resulting fuel is used in many different ways to get energy requirements.

Recently a more efficient system was designed by IMPACT BIOENERGY to use this food waste for power generation. This is a portable system, which combines the food waste and microbes together. Microbes break down the organic materials into biogas. Biogas is used as a fuel in a generator to produce electricity.

System designed by impact bioenergy is called as HORSE. HORSE stands for high organic recycle solid electric output. According to impact system is designed to reduce the size and cost of anaerobic digestion. The system provides on-site generation of electricity form food waste and other organic materials.
Product of this system is
·       Light energy.
·       Heat energy.
·       Electricity.
·       Vehicle fuel.

Which waste can be used in this system?

The HORSE can take a wide range of organic wastes, including kitchen trim, post-consumer dining room food scraps, meat, grease, oil, all edible liquids, seafood, dairy products, starch, sugar, fruit, vegetable, small bones, soiled paper products, napkins, tissue, paper towels, waxed paper, grass clippings, leaves, fats, fryer oil, grease trap waste, beverages, alcohol, soup, condiments, eggshells, glycerin, etc.

Which waste cannot be used?

If a real horse can't eat it, you should not put it in this one.  For example; no plastics, glass, or metal, no soap or cleaning products, too much salt. Wood is not bad but also not helpful. Things which would kill bacteria.
System is capable to produce 15,000 to 105,000 BTU/hr continuously.

It can produce 5,400 gallons of liquid fertilizer. It is capable to consume 25 tons of food waste per year. Maximum electric output is 2.5 to 4KW.
